There was a time when launching a rocket was an event.
People stopped what they were doing. Television networks carried the countdown. A rocket sitting on a launchpad was news.
On August 15, 2026, SpaceX launched two of them in about 38 minutes.
One Falcon 9 lifted off from Florida carrying Globalstar communications satellites. Then, before you could finish watching a sitcom, another Falcon 9 launched from California carrying the classified USSF-366 mission for the U.S. Space Force.
Two orbital rocket launches. Two opposite coasts.
About 38 minutes apart.
SpaceX had just set a new company record.
But perhaps the most remarkable thing about it is that it wasn’t really that remarkable anymore.
This Wasn’t the First Time
SpaceX’s previous record came on August 31, 2024, when it launched two Falcon 9 missions just 65 minutes apart.
Maybe the first time you could dismiss it as a scheduling fluke—a particularly unusual day when two missions happened to line up almost perfectly.
But then it happened again.
And this time SpaceX cut the interval by another 27 minutes.
At some point, something stops looking like a fluke and starts looking like a pattern.
Rocket launches are becoming routine.
Look at the Numbers
The change becomes even more dramatic when you zoom out.
According to spaceflight historian Jonathan McDowell’s count of worldwide orbital launch attempts:

Think about that for a second.
In 2019, the entire planet attempted 102 orbital launches.
Six years later, the world attempted 330.
And 2026 isn’t exactly slowing down. One launch tracker had already counted 180 orbital launches this year before August was even underway. Different databases use slightly different counting methodologies, but the direction of the numbers isn’t remotely ambiguous.
Then There’s SpaceX
SpaceX has been the biggest force behind the acceleration.
In 2024, SpaceX flew 134 Falcon-family missions. In 2025, that climbed to 165.
By August 12, 2026, SpaceX had already completed its 94th Falcon 9 launch of the year.
Then came the August 15 doubleheader.
Elon Musk has spent years talking about making rockets reusable and increasing the frequency of access to space. Whatever you think of Musk—and there certainly isn’t a shortage of opinions—one part of that vision is becoming increasingly difficult to argue with:

Reusability has helped turn something that once looked almost handcrafted into something increasingly resembling an operating schedule.
Launch. Land the booster. Prepare another mission. Launch again.
And again.
And again.
Maybe That’s the Real Milestone
August 15, 2026 probably won’t become one of the famous dates in spaceflight history.
Nobody landed on the Moon.
Nobody became the first person to orbit Earth.
No new planet was discovered.
SpaceX simply launched two rockets.
And perhaps that’s exactly why the date is interesting.
The extraordinary part isn’t that people have stopped caring about rockets. Rockets are still rockets. Sending a machine screaming through the atmosphere fast enough to reach orbit remains an astonishing technological achievement.
The extraordinary part is that we’ve become capable of doing it frequently enough that two orbital launches from opposite sides of the United States can happen 38 minutes apart without most people even realizing it happened.
One doubleheader could have been a novelty.
Do it again, cut the interval almost in half, and do it during a period when annual launch totals are exploding?
Now you’re looking at a pattern.
There was a time when launching a rocket felt like launching a rocket.
On August 15, 2026, it started feeling just a little more like dispatching the next flight from the airport.
And that may ultimately be the bigger achievement.
